■The Tohoku Youth Orchestra originated from the "Lucerne Festival ARK NOVA Matsushima 2013," a music festival that connected Tohoku with the world, held in Matsushima Town, Miyagi Prefecture, from September to October 2013.
Comprising members primarily from the three prefectures affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake (Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima), the orchestra consists of children from elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and universities who usually perform in different organizations. They adapt their ensemble for each program while engaging in activities. The Tohoku Youth Orchestra's mission goes beyond mere musical performances. It serves as a "growth space" where children from Tohoku, through interactions with accomplished musicians, performances, and exchanges with various individuals they wouldn't encounter otherwise, gain insights into the world and accumulate experiences with numerous companions. The energy of these children aims to invigorate not only the surrounding adults and communities but the entire Tohoku region, contributing to the creation of a new future.
With a belief that many emotions can be expressed through music that words may fail to convey, the orchestra aspires to share numerous inspirations through music. With the spirit of overcoming the earthquake, they aim to deliver powerful and beautiful music born in Tohoku to audiences across Japan and around the world.
