I am very happy to hear that the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to those who have been working for “Never again let there be another hibakusha” as I played Suzu in “In This Corner of the World”.
I had refused to think about war until I was given the role of Suzu-san. It seemed scary and unrealistic, and I think I calmed myself by keeping it away from my mind. I think there are many people like me.
But to abandon the thought that it has nothing to do with me, even if this terrible sadness befalls me, has nothing to do with me. That is what I have come to realize. Suzu's experience is connected to the reality in which we live.
I am truly humbled by her tremendous determination to overcome the long suffering of those who themselves were exposed to the atomic bombing and have already passed away, and to continue to pass it on to future generations.
I hope that this will be an opportunity to convey to the world that nuclear weapons are absolutely no good.
Congratulations on the Nobel Peace Prize, which is a worldwide recognition of your years of effort and determination. (I was moved by the thoughts of Mr. Toshiyuki Mimaki, President of the Hiroshima Prefectural Confederation of A-bomb Sufferers Organizations, as he spoke with pinched cheeks.
